Onychomycosis
Treatments
At Southern Ridge Studio, we offer laser treatment for onychomycosis using the advanced Zenith Excelsior Nd:YAG laser a non-invasive, drug-free option designed to support clearer, healthier nail growth. Our approach combines precision technology with personalised care, making it an ideal choice for clients seeking effective treatment in a refined, professional environment.
Laser treatment for onychomycosis is a progressive process, and results develop gradually as the nail grows out.
Clients can typically expect:
-
A reduction in fungal activity over a course of treatments
-
Improved nail clarity and appearance as new nail growth emerges
-
Healthier-looking nails over time, with consistent care and hygiene
-
Results that continue to improve over several months, as toenails grow slowly
It’s important to note that while laser treatment significantly reduces fungal load, ongoing foot care and prevention are essential to minimise the risk of reinfection. This will be fully discussed during your consultation.
Important Expectations
Laser treatment reduces fungal load and supports healthy nail regrowth, but results depend on consistency, nail growth rate, and ongoing preventative care. This will be clearly discussed during your consultation so expectations are realistic and transparent.

Prices
The cost of onychomycosis treatments will depend on the number of nails being treated and the severity of the infection. Factors such as nail thickness, duration of the condition, skin type, and the number of sessions required will influence your personalised treatment plan.
For cases requiring a course of treatments, package options may be available to support effective, long-term results. All pricing, treatment expectations, and suitability will be clearly discussed during your consultation, ensuring transparency and confidence before beginning treatment.

How it Works
The Nd:YAG laser is particularly well suited to treating fungal nail infections because of its ability to penetrate through the nail plate and reach the nail bed where fungal organisms live.
During treatment, controlled laser energy gently heats the nail and surrounding tissue, creating an environment that is unfavourable for fungal growth, while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This targeted approach helps reduce fungal presence and supports the growth of a clearer, healthier nail over time.
Unlike topical treatments that struggle to penetrate the nail, or oral medications that may not be suitable for everyone, laser treatment works directly at the source of the infection.

Prep & Aftercare
Preparation
-
A consultation is required to assess the nail(s), confirm suitability for laser treatment, and discuss realistic outcomes.
-
Nails must be clean, dry, and free of nail polish, gel, acrylics, or nail treatments.
-
Nails should be trimmed as short as comfortably possible prior to treatment to allow optimal laser penetration.
-
Feet should be freshly washed on the day of treatment.
-
If nails are significantly thickened, mechanical thinning may be recommended prior to or during treatment.
-
Any signs of bacterial infection, open wounds, or skin breakdown around the nail must be disclosed before treatment.
During Treatment
-
The foot and nail area are visually inspected and cleaned if required. Protective eyewear is provided.
-
The Zenith Excelsior Nd:YAG laser is selected due to its ability to penetrate the nail plate and reach the nail bed. Settings are adjusted based on:
-
Nail thickness
-
Severity of fungal involvement
-
Number of nails being treated
-
-
The laser handpiece is passed slowly and systematically over each affected nail, delivering controlled pulses of energy through the nail plate.
-
The laser energy generates heat within the nail and nail bed, creating an environment that disrupts fungal organisms while preserving healthy tissue.
-
Clients typically feel a gradual warming or heat sensation in the nail. Intensity may increase toward the end of each pass but remains brief and tolerable. Feedback is encouraged throughout.
-
Each nail takes approximately 1–2 minutes to treat. Full sessions typically last 15–30 minutes, depending on the number of nails.
-
Once all nails are treated, the area is reassessed. No dressings or downtime are required.
Aftercare
-
Nails may feel warm for a short period post-treatment—this resolves quickly.
-
Normal activities can be resumed immediately.
-
Keep feet clean and dry, particularly in the first 24 hours.
-
Use clean socks daily and avoid occlusive footwear where possible.
-
Follow recommended antifungal hygiene practices, including:
-
Disinfecting footwear
-
Avoiding barefoot exposure in communal areas
-
Not sharing nail tools or footwear
-
-
Topical antifungal products may be recommended to support results.
-
Nail improvement occurs gradually as new, healthy nail grows out:
-
Toenails: 9–12 months
-
Fingernails: 4–6 months
-
-
A series of treatments is usually required and will be scheduled according to your personalised plan.
